Charlie Mike programs and services were created with a specific purpose in mind: to create peace, healing, and a sense of stability. These programs are tailored specifically to the needs and interests of military veterans, and to achieve these desired outcomes. Our Canine Battle Buddy Program is at the core of this approach.

Every year, millions of dogs are abandoned at animal shelters, and hundreds of thousands are euthanized. Our Canine Battle Buddies are chosen from municipal animal shelters and other rescue organizations. They are carefully selected, evaluated, and tested for characteristics such as intelligence, motivation, temperament, food drive, motivation, and disposition.
Rescued dogs receive medical care to become or remain healthy, and have regular veterinarian visits. Potential Battle Buddies receive two to four (or more) months of training in a program we have developed to create capable, competent, and obedient companion dogs.
To “graduate” the program, they are constantly evaluated and tested on specific sets of tasks, behaviors, and criteria of a practical nature. We want to ensure a high potential of success for our veterans, and our Battle Buddies. In addition, there is no cost to a veteran to adopt a Canine Battle Buddy from our program.

Our Approach: Battle Buddies
One of the objectives for this program is to fill a specific space within the canine rescue and training community that does not exist anywhere else, especially for veterans. We offer a solution that lives between simply adopting a pet on one end of the spectrum, and what most people think of as a “service dog” on the other.
Service dogs are amazing, and fill an important, powerful role with people who need that service. Many veterans, however, don’t need a “service dog,” and the more specialized or specific training that those animals require. Service dogs can take anywhere from six months to two years to train, and can often range in cost from $30,000 to $80,000. Some service dog organizations, unfortunately, also have a multi-year waiting list.
Veterans who experience the results of combat trauma, PTSD or TBI, or who might be significantly struggling, can benefit from a well-trained, intelligent, disciplined, and loving dog – a Canine Battle Buddy – without the need, timeline, and expense of a “service dog.” This is our sweet spot.
Through this important and rewarding effort, we double the impact of a good cause:
rescue a dog, and as a result, rescue a veteran.
