Our Programs:
Three pillars

THE PLAN: THREE PILLARS

The three foundational pillars of Charlie Mike are universal yet tailored to each veteran, designed to address the challenges they face. This is not a “one size fits all” approach. Each persons’ experience is quite different, even if similar challenges or needs are exhibited. These pillars are designed to address three key areas affecting veterans today: PTSD and TBI, sexual assault, and suicide.

We will first launch with most of our Pillar 1 programs and services. Pillar 2 and Pillar 3 programs and services, and new programs in Pillar 1, will come online and be offered in the near future.

Dogs often prove to be an effective tool in assisting with emotional needs. It has been demonstrated that emotional support and therapy animals can provide tangible results in creating emotional healing and stability. This can correlate to a reduction in suicides, and create a sense of purpose.

In addition, approximately one million dogs in the United States are euthanized each year. We will evaluate and rescue dogs from animal shelters, train them to be “Battle Buddies,” and place them with veterans. This is a significant component of the Charlie Mike mission. In this effort, we essentially save two lives: rescue a dog, and then, rescue a veteran.

Our Canine Battle Buddy Training Program will be conducted at our facility in Liberty, North Carolina, and with program partners located in Miami, Florida.

Horses are some of the most majestic and magnificent animals on earth. Like dogs, working with and around horses can be therapeutic in nature. The emotional intuitiveness and connection required to work with horses provide several emotional benefits at the same time. Horses are a mirror, and directly respond — or don’t respond — to the emotion and energy we bring to the interaction.

Working with horses will compel honest conversations with ourselves as military veterans. It will require positive energy, and putting our own anxieties, anger, and other struggles, in check. It will require a sense of calm, and require a quietness to elicit a positive response from our equine friends and companions. Over time, this practice can teach new behavior and new emotional habits, and give a real opportunity for healing.

Our equine riding and training program will be conducted at our facility in Liberty, North Carolina.

One of the most difficult things for many combat veterans, is to talk about their experiences. Paradoxically, one of the most important things for combat veterans, is to talk about their experiences. Every veteran needs to talk to somebody. A large reality in the veteran community, is that many, perhaps even a majority, of veterans do not talk about or share their experiences, especially with counselors or other professionals. It’s hard to do, however, it’s the healthy thing to do.

Another reality is that many veterans do not want to engage with the VA, or talk to counselors within the “system.” We have a solution for that — an alternative — that we think has emerged as a new and effective option: online counseling. New technology and apps, combined with over two years of the COVID 19 pandemic have shown us that online counseling can be an effective and efficient means of talking to professionals. And for many people, it might be even easier or more convenient than any other option.

We have partnered with one of the largest online counseling services in America. We will provide four sessions per month, and unlimited text messaging with this service. This provides regular contact, interaction, and an “always on” option for our veterans.

Female veterans who have been victims of sexual abuse or assault, which is still rampant within the military, are far too often overlooked in the military and veteran community. The military is full of good people, willing to do remarkable things. Unfortunately, the military also has a problem with sexual assault and a culture that seems unable to adequately address this terrible issue.

Charlie Mike is committed to our female veterans. We will help them get private, comprehensive, and emotional support for their needs. Sexual assault breaks the most basic, fundamental, and sacred duty of any military team: trust and safety. It is a blight upon the military and should not be ignored while treating other types of traumas female veterans endure. Addressing this issue is a key component of our mission, and we will lead the charge.

Charlie Mike will offer confidential online counseling service to female veterans, and dedicate resources and program support specifically for this cause. We will stand with all our veterans, regardless of how difficult the topic.

pillar 2

stability in
daily living

PILLAR 2

Creating stability in daily living is part of the overall goal and mission of Charlie Mike. Once mental and emotional stability are created, daily living will get easier, be better, and more productive. The issues are complex and challenging, but the approach is simple. Helping veterans find and learn tools to become self-reliant is the best gift we can provide. Like the old adage says, “give a man a fish, feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime.” This daily stability will provide a foundation for participants to sustain themselves for the rest of their lives.

In addition to the mental and emotional support solutions in Pillar One, Pillar Two is both a broad, yet targeted approach to caring for the needs of veterans. Providing resources for life coaching, vocational and educational counseling, VA benefit and disability support, overcoming homelessness, and assistance through the judiciary at Veterans Treatment Courts, all have the specific goal of helping each veteran move into a better, stable, and healthy life. This includes creating and developing resources for their families, spouses, and children.

The intent is for each participant to “graduate” from the program. Charlie Mike will help veterans as long as it takes to find stability and the appropriate care they need. The goal is to help each achieve self-sustainment and “battlefield victories” as they move on with new tools, new care, and new stability.

pillar 3

stability by
serving others

PILLAR 3

As much as veterans miss their teams, they miss the service. It is a very real and tangible longing. In the volunteer force of the U.S. Military, everyone joins for various reasons. The service aspect, however, is an integral part of the job, and is instilled by every branch of the military. Once discharged, those who have deployed often miss the high tempo, the austere environment, the challenge, and yes, even the danger. Very few things in life will ever compare to or compete with wartime service. Even with all the good and bad associated with it, nothing will ever quite measure up. And that causes a lack of stability as veterans struggle to find meaning in “normal life.”

Charlie Mike has a solution: getting veterans back into service. Creating stability by serving others is a simple approach for long-term healing. The giving of oneself to another person or cause often does more for the giver than the receiver. When we serve and help each other, we serve a higher cause, and yet gain personal benefits that are immeasurable.

The solution will include community service in a larger and nontraditional way. Veterans want a “mission” — a real mission — helping real people, and where the stakes might even be high. After all, veterans are accustomed to that, and no one does it better. Charlie Mike will seek and provide service opportunities, such as natural disaster relief and clean-up in local communities, security for disaster areas or supply points, and manpower for other non-political, humanitarian needs.
